Activist-turned-politician Arvind Kejriwal formally launched his new political party – Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) – at Parliament Street in front of an impressive gathering on Monday.
The event caused traffic snarls in and around Jantar Mantar, where other rallies and demonstrations were also on.
And by the end of the event, AAP had got proposals for over 300 office premises in various cities across the country. Donations also flowed in.
Releasing the party’s constitution, Kejriwal said: ‘This party is a result of our struggle against corruption. Now it will be neta (politician) versus aam admi (common man). The common man, suffering for the last 65 years, is going to establish his own party and sit in Parliament.’
Kumar Vishwas, one of the leaders of the party, said, ‘The other political parties are thinking about our survival, but we are getting a huge response from across the nation. As many as 200 offices have been opened for the functioning of the party just today. It’s a Aam Aadmi Party... they (the aam aadmi) will run it. We are getting donations for the party from across India.’
Shanti Bhushan, former law minister, donated Rs 1 crore to the party and said people from all walks of life will sit in Parliament after the 2014 general elections. Kejriwal will be the national convenor of the party, while Pankaj Gupta would be the national secretary and Krishna Kanth would be national treasurer of AAP.
