The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday gave a 72-hour- <g data-gr-id="29">ultimatum</g> to the Central government to take action against Union Education Minister Smriti Irani. It has also demanded the resignation of Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, who are caught in the Lalit Modi <g data-gr-id="28">controversy,</g> and has questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence on it. The party said if action is not taken against them then it will launch nation-wide protests.
Senior AAP leader Ashutosh attacked the Prime Minister and said: “There are people holding important government posts who are under the scanner and yet he is silent. His silence is making him Manmohan Singh part 2.”
He further said his party saw PM Modi as a “helpless leader controlled by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)”, the BJP’s ideological mentor.
“Smriti Irani must resign as the former Law Minister Jitendra Singh Tomar did. If action is not taken against Smriti Irani in the next 72 hours, we will hold protests all across the country,” said Ashutosh.
A Delhi court on Wednesday had taken note of a complaint that Smriti Irani allegedly misrepresented her educational qualification in election affidavits. The case against the minister has been filed by a freelance writer <g data-gr-id="22">Ahmer</g> Khan who alleges that Irani has made contradictory claims about her college education in documents filed in different years with the Election Commission.
AAP volunteers protest outside Smriti’s house
Hundreds of AAP workers on Thursday staged a protest outside Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani’s residence, demanding her resignation for allegedly misleading poll authorities about her educational qualifications. The AAP volunteers gathered outside Irani’s residence around 11 am and while staging a demonstration also demanded her immediate arrest. “She (Irani) should be arrested without any delay and she must also resign as a minister,” one of the workers said. “There was no delay in the arrest of Tomar, why is <g data-gr-id="43">there</g> a delay in her case?” he asked.
