An Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor, Nisha Singh, was allegedly dragged and beaten up by police personnel before her arrest on May 15 for protesting against a demolition drive at Sector 47 in Gurgaon. The incident came to light on Monday.
According to a source, eye witnesses have alleged that several women, apart from Nisha, were actually manhandled by the police officials. Things turned worse for the police department when several AAP members alleged that the cops had spared Congress leaders who were also among the protesters.
On May 15, residents of an alleged unauthorised settlement in Gurgaon’s Sector 47 had protested against the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) which was clearing the debris of the April 12 demolition drive in Fatehpur-Jharsa village in the same Sector. A police team, accompanying HUDA officials, resorted to lathi-charge and tear gas to disperse the crowd, and arrested 19 persons including Ward 30 councillor Nisha Singh, said a senior police official.
Nisha, along with nine others, was reportedly charged with rioting, obstructing a public servant from carrying out his duties and attempt to murder. They were all sent to 14-days judicial custody and their bail pleas were reportedly put off. However, sources in the party claimed that she was actually arrested for filming the alleged police brutality in her mobile phone.
