AAP leader Manish Sisodia said the party members wanted Kejriwal to contest the upcoming Delhi elections for which he is also ready. ‘An informal meeting was held in which a few members, including Kejriwal, have been shortlisted to contest the polls. But, the constituency is yet to be finalised,’ he said.
AAP released a form for candidate’s information and announced the launch of the candidate-selection process from 15 April. ‘People from 70 assembly constituencies can recommend. Candidates should have support of at least 100 people and our screening committee will shortlist five names from each constituency,’ Further,Sisodia added by saying that the process will be fully transparent and the selection of the final candidate will be concluded within one-and-a-half months.
The forms can be filled and submitted online or at party offices in 272 wards across Delhi by 5 May. The next step will be that those five names will be again sent back to the people, seeking their suggestions and the final candidate will be selected by the party’s political affairs committee.
The candidates will have to give the declaration on an affidavit that after getting elected, they would, among others, not use red beacon vehicles, not take security and not stay in a big bungalow.
The members of screening committee are Manish Sisodia, Sanjay Rai, Rajan Prakash, Dileep Pandey and Vinod Kumar Binni. The party also said emails requesting suggestions, attached with a form, will be sent to three lakh people, including resident welfare associations of Delhi.
When asked whether the party’s central leadership will fight the Delhi elections, Sisodia said it was not decided who all among the top leaders will enter the fray. Sisodia also alleged that major parties like Congress and BJP select their candidates after deliberations in closed rooms and there is corruption and nepotism in it. ‘We are challenging it. We will not have two members from a single family contesting elections,’ he said.
