The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday announced the formation of an internal committee on sexual harassment, as per the Vishaka guidelines of the Supreme Court. The party claimed that it was the first political party to form such a committee.
‘It would be a committee of three women members, Atishi Marlena, Preeti Sharma Menon and Leela Ramdas, who will look after women-related complaints,’ Dilip Pandey, a member of AAP’s political affairs committee, said at a press conference here.
While Atishi Marlena and Preeti Sharma Menon are members of the party, Leela Ramdas is a social activist. Pandey claimed that the AAP was the first political party in the country to have such a committee. This committee will keep a close eye on complaints and will take steps as per the court’s guidelines.
The Vishaka judgment by the Supreme Court laid down guidelines for employers to deal with complaints of sexual harassment/assault at the workplace, and stipulated the formation of committees to dispose of complaints from victims.
Senior party leader Kumar Vishwas, during the interaction with the media, said that AAP is setting a new example by taking such steps. ‘We want to change the politics and its rotten system. With such steps women will also feel safe and can work freely’, he said.
AAP leaders further said that they are hoping other political party will follow their steps and will form similar committees in their orgasation.
