The South Delhi corporation has decided to give permanent permission for Durga Puja celebrations at six parks in the Chittaranjan Park area. No one will be able to use these parks for any other purpose or celebration during the days of Puja.
‘The Bengali community in the city have had to face problems to get permission to use the parks for Durga Puja celebrations every year, as people from other communities also apply for the space to hold Ram Lila and other celebrations at the same time,’ said Rajesh Gehlot, chairman of the Standing Committee of South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), who along with the Leader of the House, Subhash Arya, put the resolution in the House.
As per existing corporation rules, the allotment of parks for religious celebrations is made on first-come-first-serve basis. This often creates disputes among various communities as each one tries to get the the park for their celebration. Often, police intervention has been required to settle the matter.
‘We have identified six parks in the C R Park area where the Bengali community has been celebrating Durga Puja for the last 30-40 years. The corporation will now give permanent permission for Durga Puja in these parks,’ Gehlot said.
The decision to give permanent permission to these committees was approved by the House as the area has a high density of people from the Bengali community. These parks measure between 0.50 acre to 2.50 acres.
Zonal Park Plot no D-655, the largest park among the six, will be allotted to the Sarbojanin Puja Samity, while D Block and the smallest park of Plot no E-835 will be allotted to Chittaranjan Park Purbanchal Durga Puja. The resolution was passed in the meeting of the House on Monday.
