A market that will be a women’s bastion

Delhi is all set to get the only Mahila Haat on the occassion of Diwali. All traders in the market would be women. Men can enter the Mahila Haat only if accompanied by a woman.

'All stall owners and traders in the Mahila Haat will be women. Furthermore, NGOs participating in the Haat are being run by women enterpreneurs. ‘We have obtained a list of such NGOs and enterprenuers from the union ministry of textiles and the alltoment is being made on the basis of the list,' said Mira Aggarwal, mayor, North Delhi Municipal Corporation [NDMC]. 'The Mahila Haat will be inagurated on 3 November by Sushma Swaraj, leader of opposition in Lok Sabha,' added Aggarwal.

Developed on an area of 6,000 square metres, the Mahila Haat will come up at Aruna Asaf Ali Car Parking, Delhi Gate. Giving details of the project, the mayor said that since the area is mostly surrounded by a wall and is very thickly populated, the Mahila Haat will become a happening place where people will be able to enjoy Indian cuisines in the two food-courts and daily cultural evenings.  'The design of the Haat has been okayed by the experts and only necessary changes have been made on the basis of inputs of traders,' she added.

A woman trader will be allotted a particular shop for 15 days on the payment of Rs 15 per day. Allottments can be renewed for a maximum of two times.
