A lot is riding on Rajesh Gehlot in south civic body

'The name of Sarita Chaudhury was decided at the eleventh hour that too after intervention of national leaders of the party,' said a senior leader of Delhi BJP.

Earlier, Anil Sharma and Radheshyam Sharma were being considered by the party for the post but both the groups supporting these names were reluctant to accept the other name and party could not decide the candidate till 1.30 pm, the official time for filing the nominations.

The leaders of Delhi BJP and senior councillors of South DMC were summoned by national leaders for consultation and subsequently both names were dropped. According to sources, in the meeting with BJP national president Rajnath Singh, a consent was achieved on the name of Subhash Arya but he refused the offer and Sarita Chaudhary was declared as party candidate for the post of mayor. She is the third time councillor from ward number 177, Sangam Vihar, in South Zone.

Gehlot also lobbied for Subhash Arya, a four time councillor from Rajouri Garden in west zone. Arya also wanted to be a mayor but has been retained as leader of house in South DMC and will also be member in standing committee as the party has decided to put all the three leaders of houses as members in standing committees of civic bodies.

Gehlot also convinced the party to nominate his supporter Satender Chaudhary, a Gurjar, as his deputy in the standing committee.

BJP has given the post of deputy mayor to its alliance BSP and Sahiram Pehelwan, a Gurjar, filed his nominations for the post on Wednesday.

According to sources, he is a strong supporter of Gehlot and was convinced to support the party on the condition that Gehlot be given a second term. Nearly 12 independents also put similar conditions before the party.

Besides these candidates, Congress councillor from Andrews Ganj and former student leader Abhishek Dutt and independent councillor Promila Tokas also filed their nominations for the post of mayor. Praveen Rana of Congress and independent councillor Satender Singh Rana filed their nominations for the post of deputy mayor.
