9-yr-old molested in Loni, police lathicharge crowd

The angry mob reached the police station along with the victim and engaged in arson and stone pelting leading to lathicharge.

Meanwhile, police have said that they have added sections under the Prevention of Children Against Sexual Offences Act (POSCO). ‘The complaint was filed according to the girl’s statement and the accused has been arrested also. We have deployed police at religious places in the area. We will take strict action against those spreading rumours,’ said a senior police official.

The girl has been sent for medical examination. ‘We have added POSCO Act in the FIR and are waiting for the same. If rape is confirmed in the medical report, the appropriate section will be added.’

As situation deteriorated, a huge police force along with Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) and Rapid Action Force (RAF) was deployed and Section 144 was imposed to stop people from assembling at any particular place and lathicharged.

Senior police officials, while visiting the affected areas, said the situation though tense is now normal.

‘After the rape incident, there were problems before noon. People were saying that action has not been taken. But the fact was that the accused was arrested on Sunday night itself. After that, lots of people came on the road and there was stone pelting. And now that the force has come in, we have got four companies of PACs, the deployment is there 100 percent and life is slowly returning to normalcy,’ said Alok Sharma, Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Meerut Zone.

‘It was a flare-up that was I think engineered by some rumours that the girl had died. We have, now, clarified that the girl is safe and the accused has been arrested, things are getting back to normalcy. The investigation is on, the girl’s medical test has been done and the accused arrested. Rest depends on the girl’s statement,’ he added.

The parents of the minor girl said that the incident took place on Sunday when she was playing outside the residence of one Sher Mohammad who he took her inside on some pretext and raped her. As news spread like wild fire in the area that the victim and accused are of different communities, tension broke out in the area.

The situation became worse when the police considered it a molestation case and registered an FIR
accordingly. The girl’s aunt said: ‘The girl was sitting alone outside her house when the accused came inside. The police didn’t help us at all. They threatened us that we should leave our house and stay elsewhere for a few days and not discuss the incident with anyone. The police even lathicharged us.’

The Uttar Pradesh government, however, hit out at the media for reporting the incident in such a manner. SP leader Naresh Agarwal said: ‘I don’t understand why is the media focusing only on UP.

It’s not that UP is on top in terms of crimes. It’s not that we are defending ourselves on crimes but strict actions are taken against such crimes.’
