An 80-year-old woman, along with her eight-year-old grandson were held hostage by three unidentified armed assailants, as their residence in north-east Delhi’s Seemapuri area was robbed on Wednesday evening.
According to police, the incident took place at approximately 6.30 pm when Nanhi Begum (80) and Ebrahim (8) were alone at home. The other inhabitant of the house, Mushral Jahan (55), a businesswoman, had gone to drop her daughter, Farin Sayad (17) for her tuition classes in nearby Dilshad Colony. Jahan told police that when she returned home, she found the main door of the house to be locked from outside. When she entered the house, she found the house ransacked, and seemingly empty. A search of the house, however, led her to find her mother and son in the bathroom, with their hands and legs tied and their mouths taped. 'After I set them free, they narrated their experiences to me and I immediately made a call to the police control room,' she said.
The old woman told the police that, 'Soon after Jahan left the house, some one knocked on the door and rang the door-bell several times. When I opened the door three unidentified men pushed me and got in. All of them were armed with knives. They pointed the knives at us and tied me and my grandson up and made us sit in the bathroom. They then ransacked the house’.
The official investigating the matter said that Rs. 4 lakh in cash, along with gold jewellery and valuable items were taken from the house. 'A case under the appropriate sections of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against the three unidentified assailants at Seemapuri police station,' the official added.
When the cops reached the spot, they found the condition of the two to be critical as they had been taped and tied up for a long time. So they were immediately rushed to the nearby hospital, from where they were discharged after being administered first-aid. Their statements have been recorded. Jahan has told police that approximately two weeks ago, she had called her mother over to help her take care of the family, as her daughter, Farin, was appearing for her Board examinations.
