A 65-year-old widow was allegedly strangled first and then hit on her head with a blunt object to ensure her death by her step grandson over a property dispute in West Delhi’s Uttam Nagar area. The deceased woman has been identified as Munni Devi.

According to the police, the accused, Vinay (19), was detained by the police in the evening based on the CCTV footage in which it was clearly visible how he entered Munni Devi’s house on late Monday night and left early on Tuesday. On the other hand, Vinay was present at the crime scene through the whole time acting innocent to divert the cop’s attention.

According to the police, the incident took place in the early hours of Tuesday morning when Munni was fast asleep and Vinay smothered her with a dupatta and later hit on her head with a blunt object to ensure that she was dead. It was only around 11.30 am on Tuesday when Munni’s neighbour came to give her prasad that he found her lying in a pool of blood.

The neighbour informed the family members and a call was made to the Police Control Room (PCR). The neighbour then informed Munni’s son, Raj Kumar, who lives nearby in Rajapuri area.

A team of forensic experts and police officials rushed to the spot to scan the crime scene and collect evidence. Meanwhile, the CCTV footage was thoroughly scanned and a person was seen exiting Munni Devi’s house on Tuesday morning.

“Vinay had cordial relations with his step-grandmother so he stayed at her house in Mohan Nagar area on Monday night. We are investigating the role of his mother, Sunita and other immediate family members as to who instigated him to commit this act,” said Dependra Pathak, Joint Commissioner of Police (South-west Range).

During interrogation, Vinay revealed that he held a private job and was under pressure to return the money which he had borrowed from his friends to buy a smart phone. He also divulged that he took away Rs 4,000 cash after killing his step-grandmother. A case has been registered at the Uttam Nagar police station under Section 302 of the IPC against the culprit.
