65-year-old man shoots self, dies

Mahender Kumar Tokas,  65, a resident of Munirka, who used to run a public welfare trust, shot himself dead with his licensed revolver at his house on Wednesday.

A suicide note was recovered from his possession in which he blamed the government for his death. Tokas’ suicide note, which was written in Hindi, read: ‘It is very difficult to do noble work here as the government does not allow it. I want to do some more good work in my life but the government is restricting me.’

Tokas, who was a former village head, was known as ‘pradhan’ in his neighbourhood. ‘He was a social worker. He took care of stray animals in need through his trust,’ said a resident of Munirka. He was found dead at around 8.45 am on Wednesday in his house with a bullet injury on his right temple. Tokas is survived by his wife and two sons, who run a property business.

According to the police, ‘He was suffering from depression for the last two years and was on medication. He lived separately from his family and did not commuincate much with them.’

But the police officials did not choose to comment on government related issues that he mentioned on his suicide note.

Hearing the gun shot, his neighbours and family members rushed inside the room to find him in a pool of blood. ‘He was rushed to AIIMS where he was declared brought dead,’ a police official said.
