63-yr-old killed by husband in a fit of rage

A 63-year-old woman working with the Science and Technology Department of the Central government was stabbed in the neck by her husband in West Delhi’s Subhash Nagar area on Thursday morning. The husband himself informed the police and based on his interrogation, he was arrested.

“Sushma was the sole bread-winner of the family since her husband, Rajender Kumar, was unemployed and they had no children. Working at the Science and Technology department, the couple was living on Sushma’s pension money after her retirement in 2012. Although Rajender was not a regular drinker, they often had fights over money. He became irritable over time as he was also suffering from old-age depression,” said a senior investigation official.

According to the police, Rajender stabbed his wife with a kitchen knife in a fit of rage multiple times
in the neck.

This happened around 12 am. She was chopping vegetables in the drawing room when he came to her asking for money. She refused which infuriated him to such an extent that he stabbed her with the kitchen knife. After killing her, he made a PCR call around 1 pm. When the cops rushed to their fourth floor residence, they apprehended him and took him to Subhash Nagar police station.

“When Rajender was being questioned, the police team found him disturbed. Crime team present at his house also found medical reports of VIMHANS (Vidyasagar Institute of Mental Health, Neuro & Allied Sciences) which suggests that he was undergoing treatment for depression for quite some time,” said a senior police official.

Locals claimed that they often heard loud voices coming from the elderly couple’s house but never thought that the senior citizen would do something as extreme as killing his wife, said police.

Police have sent Sushma’s body for post-mortem examination at the Deen Dayal Upadhayay hospital after which friends and relatives will be handed over the body for last rites.

Meanwhile, police have registered a case under Section 302 of the IPC at the Subhash Nagar police station against Rajender Kumar. Further investigation is underway.
