60 women pillion riders dead in road accidents since January 2013: Reports

In the same year, there was an increase of 30 per cent in women riders suffering from severe injuries, reveals records of Delhi Traffic Police.

The records show that 60 women pillion riders have lost their lives from 1 January 2013 to 28 February 2014 in the national capital. In the same period, as many as 289 women riders have suffered severe injuries.

‘The data shows how necessary it became to make helmets mandatory for women pillion riders,’ said a senior police official while adding that ‘safety comes prior to everything else, when you are riding on Delhi roads.’

Soon after the Delhi Government has made it compulsory for women pillion riders to wear helmets, the Delhi Traffic Police said that it will start an awareness campaign to promote wearing of helmets among women. ‘The campaign shall last for 15 to 30 days before they start imposing a penalty of Rs 100 for this offence’, said Anil Shukla, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic).

He further said, this campaign period will provide women riders with reasonable time to buy helmets. ‘This government notification will lead to a spurt in demand of helmets in Delhi,’ Shukla said.

He also mentioned that the helmets have to be proper crash helmets. ‘Construction helmets and sports helmets, used by many pillion riders in the city will not be exempted from the penalty. Such helmets are prone to risk in case of road accidents’, he added.

Meanwhile, the police have clarified that Sikh women are exempted from the new amendment in the Delhi Motor Vehicle Rules, 1993.

‘But, they will have to prove their identity when asked by a traffic official’, said a senior police officer.
