The gang was named after a famous Bollywood movie Badshah and used to target merchants in Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata. After each robbery, they used to come back to Mumbai by flight and plan their next mission, said Madhur Verma, Deputy Commissioner of Police (north).
‘The gang was busted with the help of footages obtained from the CCTV cameras in the area installed under the Business Area Watch Scheme, based on a model implemented in the past at Surat in Gujarat, in August 2014,’ said Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi, while briefing media about the case.
The accused were identified as Shamim Jafri (25), his father Nasim Jafri (59), Ahmed Malik (32), Salim Malik (32), Madan Sen (24) and Manoj Dashrath Gupta (49). Shamim allegedly led the gang and was involved in a number of cheating cases in Mumbai.
According to police, on the afternoon of 7 November, a businessman, identified as Manoj Kumar Jain,
was walking down a deserted lane at Dariba Kalan, Asia’s largest jewellery market, when somebody snatched his bags and fled the spot. But eventually, he got hold of a man whom he suspected to be involved in the case. ‘Initially there were no evidences against the suspect and he continued with his drama of innocence.
Once the CCTV footages were properly checked, it emerged that he was involved and was later identified as Ahmed Malik,’ said Madhur Verma.
He further said, they executed the robbery like a relay race. The eight accused transferred the bag from hand to hand so swiftly that it became traceless within seconds. However, the entire sequence fell in place after a few footages from several cameras were combined and studied.
After being subjected to intensive interrogation, Malik disclosed the names of the other gang-members and based on his tip-off, a team of police officials was immediately sent to Mumbai.
But the absconding accused changed their plans and later, based on tip-off from other sources, five of them were nabbed from Surat. Two members of the gang – Sajid and Guddu – are still at large. ‘The case is being further investigated and they shall be arrested soon,’ added Verma.
