53-yr-old Punjab bizman arrested from Shalimar Bagh

A 53-year-old Punjab-based businessman, who allegedly killed his pregnant secretary around 20 years ago and later jumped bail, was arrested by Delhi Police on May 6, officials said on Saturday.

Vipan Khanna, was living in northwest Delhi’s Shalimar Bagh area and claimed to be a lawyer, with forged documents to support his claims. He was also allegedly involved in the trade of illicit liquor, police said on Saturday.

Khanna belongs to Ludhiana in Punjab. He worked at his father’s aluminum and stainless steel utensils’ business named ‘Khanna Metal Works’ in 1995 and appointed a woman as his secretary. He had allegedly developed an intimate relationship with the woman and later killed her when she reportedly became pregnant as he desperately wanted to get rid of her.

He allegedly committed the crime with the help of his then-driver Amarjeet, and it was Vipan’s father Ramlal Khanna who had allegedly hatched the whole conspiracy. In 1998, all three were convicted. Their conviction was upheld by the High Court of Punjab and Haryana, but they managed to get a bail from Supreme Court in 1999. Vipan allegedly jumped the bail and moved to Delhi and lived here in several localities.

On May 6, the police received a tip-off and laid a trap near Nizamuddin Railway Station. Vipan was arrested from there when he approached there in a Toyota Innova SUV with a fake number plate, said Ravindra Yadav, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime).

On being interrogated, he later told the police that he was living in Shalimar Bagh as Advocate Vipan Kumar. He also procured cards to prove his identity purportedly issued by Bar Association of Ludhiana. He used several other forged documents, by the name of Vipan Kumar, which included two driving licenses purportedly issued by the transport authority in Ludhiana.
