According to a recent study conducted by the World Federation of Hemophilia, almost 50 per cent of the world’s Hemophilia population lives in India and almost 70 per cent of People with Hemophilia
(PWH) do not have adequate access or knowledge about the treatment.
‘Awareness is very necessary. Due to awareness, more cases of hemophilia have been diagnosed. But till now, many are still not aware and patients go undetected with the disorder,’ said a professor at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
Hemophilia is a genetic and life-threatening bleeding disorder. Even with a minor injury or cut, in hemophilia patients’ blood does not clot normally due to the absence of clotting proteins called Factors.
‘Early symptoms include unexplained and excessive bleeding from cuts or injuries, or after surgery, Unusual bleeding after vaccinations, pain, swelling or tightness in your joints,’ said another doctor.
Hemophilia symptoms vary, depending on the degree of blood clotting factor (coagulation factor) deficiency. They also depend on the nature of the injury. Health experts says that Hemophilia should be diagnosed early and treated on time. ‘If not taken care, recurrent and prolonged bleeding into joints and muscles can lead to permanent disability and bleeding from the sensitive organs can lead even to death’, informed the doctor.
