A five-year-old girl fell into 75-feet borewell in Khaw village of Manesar near Gurgaon on Thursday. Currently, she is stuck at 68 feet.
The rescue operation to take out the girl, Mahi Upadhyay, safely is on. District Administration has also called upon the National Security Guard [NSC] to help the 50 Army men and locals who are trying to dig a parallel tunnel there.
A team of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation [DMRC] is also present on the spot to assist in the rescue operation. A huge drill machine, which is used to dig earth for fixing pillars for elevated Metro station was brought.
On Wednesday, Mahi was celebrating her birthday with her family. Around 11 pm, she went out of her house and fell into the deep borewell that was dug in front of the rented accommodation.
No movement could be detected by the cameras that were installed and later dropped into the borewell to track her.
A photograph was finally captured with the help of a camera, which shows her waving her hand.
‘We cannot yet predict her health conditions,’ an official of the Health department said.
Three JCB machines were pressed into service to dig parallel tunnels on two sides of the bore well. Assistance of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation [DMRC] has also been taken.
The bore well is surrounded by residential houses and it is difficult to dig another hole near it, as there is a high risk of the nearby houses collapsing. That is why, as a precautionary measure, orders have been given to evacuate the houses.
In the noon, rescue operation had to be halted as machines were unable to reach the spot because of the narrow lanes leading to it. Neeraj Upadhyay, father of Mahi, said that she fell inside the hole around 11 pm and till one-and-a-half-hour after that, her choked voice was audible.
‘She was crying badly and was requesting her mother to take her out. She was saying Mummy, mujhe andhere mein darr lag raha hai. Mujhe bahar nikalo please. [I am scared in the dark, take me out please],’ said Upadhyay.
‘Oxygen is being supplied to the girl continuously so that she does not have any difficulty in breathing. Her medical condition is not yet clear but we have arranged for immediate medical aid,’ said Punit Garg, Chief Medical Officer of Gurgaon.
R S Sangwan, spokesperson of District Administration, said, ‘It is very unfortunate that the girl has fallen into the well. We are all praying for her good health. She turned five yesterday only. She has a long life ahead. As soon as she is rescued, we will take action against those responsible for this negligence. Authorities have been instructed to ascertain why the borewell was left open.’
