5-yr-old boy dies after being hit by dumper

A five-year-old boy was killed after a dumper of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) hit the child near his house in Mother Dairy area of East Delhi’s Patparganj area on Friday evening.

The child, Shivam, was playing near his house in a slum cluster in the Mother Dairy area when a dumper of MCD collided with him, police said.

Family members of the child complained that the incident took place at around 1.30 pm while Shivam was playing near his house and that police inaction in the case led to their child’s death. Meanwhile, according to senior police officials of the East district, they got to know about the accident only at around 4.30 pm.

Police said that one of the locals made a PCR call informing them about the accident and told them that the dumper’s driver picked up the child with the JCB machine and dumped him in the garbage bin near the slum cluster. Locals also informed the police that after hitting the child, the driver of the dumper fled with the vehicle from the scene.

On the other hand, Shivam’s parents rushed him to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

“We have registered a case against the errant driver at the Patparganj police station under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. We are trying to trace the driver. Probe is on,” said B S Gurjar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East). Shivam’s family alleged that they ran from one hospital to another hospital in order to get him admitted. However, a short delay in getting him admitted led to the boy’s demise.

Survived by two sisters, Shivam was the youngest child in the family. His parents are small-time labourers.

According to the police, they have initiated massive search operations in the Mother Dairy area to trace the errant driver. They are also scanning the CCTV footage of the area to ascertain the exact sequence of events.
