5 months after their convocation, MAMC grads still wait for degrees

Even after seven months of completing their MBBS course, the young doctors of Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) are running from pillar to post to get their degrees. In absence of degrees these medical graduates are unable to apply in foreign universities to pursue higher education.

Earlier, the University of Delhi used to provide ‘advance degrees’ as provisional degrees to MBBS students but this time the university has issued a certificate which is not accepted by foreign medical colleges.

“The delay in issuing the degree by the University will waste whole one year of my son. The one year gap will reflect badly on his career in the future when he will be trying to apply in medical schools in the USA,” said a father of one of the graduates, who requested anonymity.

MAMC held convocation function for these graduates in February this year, where interestingly no degrees were given. Also, a letter was sent from the college to the parents assuring them that the degrees will be given by May 2016. There are around 16 graduates whose dream of studying in foreign countries could be delayed by one year due to the procedural delay in issuing degrees.

“It tells us about the state of our education system where we have to literally beg for our degrees. I have applied in colleges aboard but without the degree it will not work out. That also means that my one year will be wasted,” said a MAMC graduate who requested anonymity. “We met the Registrar and the Dean and requested them to expedite the issuance of degree,” added the student. The Dean could not be contacted despite several attempts but the parents have told us that his office has assured advance degrees which will be issued within 10 days.
