5 held for assaulting madrassa students

Delhi Police have arrested five men in connection with the attack on three youth in Outer Delhi’s Begumpur area for not saying ‘Jai Mata Di’. According to the police, the accused have been identified as Aditya, Sachin, Sagar, Ashu and Karmavir. Police said that it was difficult to solve the case as the three students kept changing their statements.

According to the police, on March 26, three students of a madrassa, Dilkash, Ajmal and Naeem alleged that they were passing through the bamboo park in the evening when they were attacked by the accused for refusing to say “Jai Mata Di”.

Dilkash, who suffered a broken arm following the attack, told the cops that he and his friends were returning from the park in the evening when they were attacked.

“The madrassa students are continuously changing their statements. Meanwhile, the accused informed the cops during interrogation that Dilkash and his friends were passing through the park when the accused who were playing cricket entered into a scuffle with the madrassa students. On being hit by the cricket ball, one of the students used abusive language which infuriated them so much that they beat one of the students with a bat. The accused denied the allegations that they beat the three students for refusing to chant the religious slogans,” said a senior Delhi Police official.

Police said that the three madrasa students, who are from Bihar’s Purnia district, came to Delhi last year to study at the Faiz-ul-uloom Ghausia madrassa in Begumpur.

Meanwhile, after the attack, the accused fled the spot. By the time the PCR call was made, only the students were found at the crime scene.

According to a senior police officer, the accused have been charged with causing grievous hurt and wrongful restraint.

A senior police officer added that: “The culprits accepted that they beat up the madrassa students and attacked one of them with a bat. But they denied they forced the victims to say ‘Jai Mata Di’.”
