As many as 49 mosques in the capital city, including the famous Jama Masjid in the Walled City, has run up a power bill of Rs 4.46 crore, with penalty, as the charges have not been paid for the last several years.
Mosques such as Badi Masjid in Chandni Chowk, Masjid Pathan, Masjid Mochihaan Delhi Gate and Masjid Arvind Hospital in old Delhi are some of the mosques whose bill payment is due.
Anil Ambani-owned power distribution company BSES has given an official written complaint to Delhi Waqf Board regarding the payment of the bills, which have been pending for a long time.
Jama Masjid tops the list with a whopping Rs 4.16 crore bill.
Already, BSES has snapped power supply to the area as penalty for unpaid dues, and residents in the vicinity of the mosque have been suffering.
Sources said in the Jama Masjid, as many as 60 air-conditions have been installed. However, not a single one of them is in the hall where people gather for prayers. All of them have been installed in the rooms and offices of the Masjid premises.
Confirming the news, a BSES official said, ‘Yes, we have given a letter to the board, requesting them to make the payment. It is just a reminder as earlier also, we had asked them to make the payment for all these mosques. Most of these mosques are located in Daryaganj area.’
Jama Masjid’s Shahi Imam, Maulana Syed Ahmed Bukhari, and Delhi Waqf Board have been holding each other responsible for clearing the dues.
Talking to Millennium Post, Delhi Waqf Board Chairman Mateen Ahmed said, ‘We have already started depositing the amount and we have to find a solution for this. We will discuss with BSES and Shahi Imam and will solve out everything.’
BSES official also said that the three transformers that are in the premises of Jama Masjid need to be transferred from there, as BSES officials didn’t have access to it for maintenance.
POWER SUPPLY CUT OFF TO PEERA GARHI RELIEF CAMP
Power distribution company BSES Rajdhani on Friday snapped electricity supply to Peera Garhi relief camp in north-west Delhi, which was set up for Punjabi migrants in 1984. The camp was provided with electricity following directive from the city government and the payment used to be made by the Revenue Department. As of today, 1,500 inhabitants are residing in the camp, of which only bonafide allotees are entitled to free electricity, a BRPL official said. The discom disconnected the supply due to non-payment of dues to the tune of Rs 6.27 crore by the government. ‘BRPL was deferring the disconnection on humanitarian grounds till now,’ the official said.
