Four days after the horrifying incident, in which a 48-year-old man was allegedly burnt by two Delhi police constables for not paying the demanded extortion amount, the victim succumbed to his injuries at Safdarjung Hospital on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the auto-rickshaw driver and son of the deceased Naveen, who was allegedly harassed by the constables, complained that he was offered Rs 10-15 lakh as bribe for withdrawing the case.
Senior officers of the Delhi police, however, remained quiet after Uday Chand’s death. Several attempts to reach deputy commissioner of police (south) BS Jaiswal for information on the development in the investigation failed. There was no intimation regarding the action taken against the constables identified as Raj Kumar and Surender Kumar.
Speaking to Millennium Post, Naveen, said, ‘To withdraw the case, cops are creating pressure on us. They offered us Rs 10-15 lakh and in return they asked us to stop accusing the cops for setting my father ablaze.’ He alleged that investigating officers have tried to take the thumb impression of his father after he was declared dead.
Chand was admitted to Safdarjung by his son Naveen. On Wednesday at around 1.30 pm, Chand died. The family of the deceased has demanded a fair investigation into the incident and has forced the police to book the two constables under the charges of murder.
Sources in Delhi police said, ‘With continuous allegations being framed against the investigation being carried out by south Delhi police in connection with the incident, the case might get transferred to Delhi police crime branch.’
Family and relatives of Chand carried out a protest outside Safdarjung Hospital and raised slogans against Delhi police. They stopped the traffic on Ring Road for around 15 minutes, but the traffic police managed to restore normal traffic flow.
