45 custodial rapes in eight years, reports NHRC

Asian Centre for Human Rights (ACHR) has submitted to the Justice Verma Committee, formed by the government to look into amendments for enhanced punishment in sexual offences of extreme nature against women, to recommend removal of the requirement of prior sanction for persecution, suit or other legal proceeding against any offences relating to sexual assault.

It stated to the Commttee that at least 45 custodial rapes took place between 2002 and 2010 as per the complaints registered by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

The Committee said that it has received 6,100 e-mails containing suggestions. A press release issued after the meeting said the Committee had requested suggestions from heads of the judiciary, members of the media, statesmen, public figures, academicians and human rights organisations in India and abroad. Giving the break up to the Committee, ACHR stated that the NHRC registered two cases of custodial rapes during 2009-2010, four cases during 2008-2009, 18 cases during 2007-2008, 10 cases during 2006-2007, five cases during 2005-2006, four cases during 2004-05 and two cases of custodial rape during 2002-2003.
