A 40-year-old cable operator, also a property dealer, was allegedly shot dead by four unidentified bike-borne assailants in Outer Delhi’s Begumpur area on Friday morning. The deceased has been identified as Devender Rathi. Police suspect personal enmity as the motive behind the daylight murder.
According to the police, the incident took place at around 10 am on Friday morning in the Rajiv Nagar area of Begumpur while Rathi was on his way back to his residence when three to four bike-borne assailants chased him and shot him near his house.
More than seven rounds were allegedly fired at Devender. He received bullet injuries on his head and neck. Rathi’s friend informed the police after which he was taken to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial hospital in Mangolpuri where he was declared dead on arrival, police said.
Locals present at the crime pelted stones at the bike-borne assailants due to which they left their weapons and managed to flee from the spot. The local police lifted crucial evidence from the spot.
Rathi’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination after which it will be handed over to his family. Devender is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter. “We are investigating the case and are looking at all angles. In preliminary investigations, it appears to be a case of personal enmity,” said Vikramjeet Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer).
A case of murder has been registered at the Begumpur police station under relevant sections of the IPC against unknown persons. Police are questioning family and friends. Further investigation is on.
