4-year-old falls into manhole, dies

In yet another incident of negligence, on Wednesday, a four-year-old boy died of suffocation after he fell into a 6-feet deep manhole in south-east Delhi. No one has been arrested by Delhi police till Thursday evening.

The incident took place on the intervening night of 5 and 6 May, when Gurpreet Singh, the deceased was returning home along with his maternal grandmother from Punjab. At around 1 am on Thursday morning, when his maternal grandmother was paying the fair to the auto rickshaw driver, Gurpreet rushed towards his residence that was a couple of few meters away.

During the incident, there was no electricity in the Jaitpur area. While running towards his residence, Gurpreet could not see the open manhole. As a result he fell into the 6-feet deep manhole. His grandmother heard the screaming and a man-hunt was set up by locals to rescue Gurpreet. One of the people, involved with the search, heard Gurpreet’s voice arriving from the manhole.

Meanwhile a PCR call was made and a police team reached the spot. They failed to rescue the boy. After several attempts, the fire department was informed. The officials also failed to rescue him as the boy was stuck deep down. Later after half an hour, JCB was called to dig the sewer. At around 2.45 am, after digging 50-60 meters deep, he was rescued by the fire department and rushed to the nearby hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Gurpreet was residing with her maternal grandmother during the past year. He hails from Punjab where her mother Neeru resides with her in-laws. When Gurmeet was one-year-old, his father had separated from his mother.

On Thursday the locals carried a protest outside the police station leaving traffic snarls in the area. Till late Thursday evening, no one has been arrested. However, a case of negligence causing death in the Indian Penal Code has been registered against unknown persons.
