39 suicides in three & half years

Despite several measures adopted by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to prevent suicides in the stations, as many as 39 people have committed suicide between 1 January, 2011, and 30 June, 2014.

According to information received, six persons committed suicide in 2011 while the figure went up in 2012 and reportedly 15 persons committed suicide. As many as 13 persons died in 2013 while in 2014 (till 30 June) the figure was only five.

DMRC said there are some cases of persons falling on the metro tracks from platforms and on road/ground level from elevated stations. Such cases could be homicidal, accidental or suicidal, which is subjected to police investigation. All such cases are reported to the police for further action.

‘We have taken several steps to curb suicides on metro tracks. We have provided rigorous training to train operators and other staff deployed at metro stations and improved CCTV network coverage across every corner of the platform,’ said DMRC spokesperson.

In a bid to prevent such incidents, DMRC is planning provide Platform Screen Doors (PSD) at all stations on two new lines namely Line-7 (Mukundpur – Shiv Vihar) and Line – 8 (Janakpuri West – Kalindi Kunj), along with PSDs on six heavily crowded stations of Line – 2 (Jahangirpuri – HUDA City Centre). The details and the time span by which PSDs are likely to be provided by DMRC are as follows:
(i) Line – 2 (Jahangirpuri – HUDA City Centre) - Kashmere Gate, Chandni Chowk, Chawri Bazar, New Delhi, Rajiv Chowk and Central Secretariat — by November, 2015. (ii) Line-7 (Mukundpur – Shiv Vihar) – all stations by August, 2016 (iii) Line – 8 (Janakpuri West – Kalindi Kunj) – all stations by September, 2017.
