3.5 kg gold worth Rs 95 lakh recovered from man at airport

“Our surveillance team received a specific input that a passenger identified as Shoukath Chellanakath (31), arriving from Kuwait was carrying huge amount of gold with him”, said a CISF officer.

Accordingly, the CISF team was alerted to apprehend the said passenger and details of the passenger were shared with each member of the team. At around 4.20 am, the passenger crossed the custom area at Terminal 3 of the IGI Airport. Later, he was apprehended and brought back to the custom area by the CISF surveillance staff and thoroughly checked. During checking, 3.5 kg gold (3 pieces of 1 kg and 1 piece of 500 gm) were recovered from his possession. He had concealed the gold in his shoes, revealed the CISF officer. He was handed over by the CISF to custom officials with the recovered gold for further action.

Meanwhile, in past eight months, the CISF have recovered gold worth Rs 6.3 crore from Terminal 3 of the IGI Airport. It has also recovered contraband items worth Rs 1.58 crore between February and March 2014.

According to the data provided by the CISF, in most of the cases the gold was smuggled in the form of biscuits and bars. It recovered around 100 gold biscuits along with unaccounted cash worth Rs 1.32 crore from the passengers. The data further shows that unattended articles worth Rs 8.19 crore have been confiscated by CISF till September 2014.
