318 doctors, 204 specialists to serve Delhi

On Thursday, Delhi Health and Family Welfare Minister A K Walia stated that the government of Delhi has notified the appointment of 318 general duty medical officers and 204 non-teaching specialist doctors in Delhi Health Service Cadre.

At present, government of Delhi runs 32 major hospitals and 250 dispensaries in different locations. Since 1998, these are manned by doctors from the Central Health Service (CHS) as well as doctors engaged on contractual basis. Approvals were granted for constitution of the Delhi Health Service only in 2009.

The doctors working on contractual basis for years have been assessed for suitability by the Union Public Service Commission and are now being appointed in the initial constitution of Delhi Health Service Cadre.

Walia added that the efforts are also on to take similar steps in case of teaching specialists doctors and public health specialists for which approval have been sought already.

Meanwhile, city government is already working towards granting promotion to doctors of the CHS who have opted to remain in Delhi Health Service.

According to sources, the entire process should be completed in the next two months. A total of 259 general duty medical officers and 79 non-teaching specialists of the CHS have opted for Delhi Health Service Cadre. 'The drains can't be clean until all agencies including PWD and DDA cooperate. There is still confusion over the area demarcation for de-silting drains between the North and South. That also needs to be sorted to prevent waterlogging,' said a senior NDMC official.

No proper division of machinery and resources among corporations has also delayed the desilting work.

'The unified MCD owned two super sucker machines worth Rs 100 crore, 13 jetting and suction machines and pumps to de-silt over 80,000 metric tonnes of silt. The distribution of machinery hasn't been done properly,' the SDMC councillor added.
