31 licences seized in an hour daily for unruly driving, shows data

Every hour 31 errant drivers are prosecuted, with their licences seized for a minimum of three months in the Capital. This move was initiated by the Delhi Traffic Police after the Supreme Court order to seize driving licenses of unruly drivers.

According to a data, every hour, 15 unruly drivers are prosecuted for dangerous driving in Delhi. The data also shows that in the last 75 days (December 16, 2015-February 29, 2016), 55,800 licenses have been seized by the Delhi Traffic Police in total. Out of these 55,800 licenses, 744 have been seized per day which makes it 31 licenses in an hour. Following the orders of the Supreme Court to ensure road safety, Delhi Traffic Police has seized a total of 27,000 licenses for dangerous driving in the last 75 days in which errant drivers are fined up to Rs 1,000. This suggests that 360 licenses have been seized in a day which makes it 15 in an hour.

On the other hand, for violating traffic rules like jumping red light, 32,250 licenses have been seized from December 16 last year till February 29 this year which makes it 430 licenses in a day and 18 in an hour.

Speaking on the effectiveness of this initiative, Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Muktesh Chander said: “With the implementation of the SC’s order to seize licenses for breaking traffic rules, Delhiites have definitely become aware and have started following rules. Though not much time has passed since its implementation, we have been observing and a trend will soon start where people will abide by all traffic rules. The most important point that people have to understand is that following traffic rules will ensure their safety. Given a few more months, the numbers of licenses seized will come down.”

“We have also increased our vigilance at night. The Delhi Traffic Police has so far prosecuted 800 people at night in the last 75 days,” added Chander.
