3-month-old infant dies after being given polio drops

What appears to be a case of medical negligence in Noida, an infant died hours after she was given anti-polio drops by a team of health officials on Wednesday. The family members of the three-month-old baby alleged that she was doing well but after the polio drops were administered, she  stopped making any movement and finally expired. The district health department, however, has claimed that the polio drops were not the main reason  behind her death.

As per the report, the girl was born to Arvind and Mohini in Nagla village of Noida Phase-II through normal delivery at the district hospital on 22 August. Arvind, who works at a sweet shop, said that a team of health workers had come to the village and administered oral polio-drops to the infant.

‘We noticed that after the polio drops were administered, the infant stopped making any movement. We informed the health officials who rushed the baby to the district hospital but she could not make it,’ Arvind said.

Officials of the district health department claim that the baby was premature and underweight which might be the reasons behind her death.

‘The baby was premature and it weighted 2 kgs. The circumstantial evidence doesn’t suggest the death to occur from polio drops as 16 other children of that area were administered polio drops from the same vial and they are doing well,’ said RK Garg, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of the hospital.
