3 men carrying illegal weapons open fire at patrolling team, two cops injured

In a bid to escape, three bike-borne assailants opened fire at police patrolling team in southwest Delhi’s Dwarka area. While the accused have been arrested, the firing left two policemen severely injured.
The assailants were allegedly carrying illegal weapons. The incident took place in Dwarka Sector 23 at around 1.45 am on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday when the two cops, identified as constable Sona Ram, 28, and Ramesh, 35, were patrolling the area.
As a routine exercise, the cops stopped the accused for checking. But, instead of stopping their vehicles, one of them pulled out a country-made pistol and opened fired at Sona Ram and robbed his service revolver. The two of the accused on the other bike fled the spot.
Meanwhile, when Ramesh tried chased them, he was also shot at. However, other police team in the area managed to nab one of the accused identified as Ali, a resident of Swaroop Nagar.
On sustained interrogation, he revealed the identity of his two accomplices. After conducting several raids, the other two were also arrested from their residence. They have been identified as Sultan and Nasir.
They told police that at the time of the incident they were carrying illegal weapons with them. ‘When police stopped our vehicle, we got scared and opened fired on them’, said a police officer quoting accused’s statement.
All of them have been booked under sections 307, 186, 353, 34 of IPC and 25-26 of Arms Act. ‘Further investigation is on to know from where did they get those illegal weapons’ the official said.
