3 killed in Agra blast

A major explosion occurred at a scrap shop in Tajganj police station area of the Agra city today, just a kilometer away from the Taj Mahal, in which two people were killed and a woman was injured, police said.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Subhash Dubey said that the explosion occurred at a scrap shop in which two labourers – Ramnivas and Chotu died on the spot. A woman was injured in the explosion and she was admitted to the hospital where her condition is stated to be serious, he said.

After the explosion, the shop caught fire creating panic in this busy area. The fire was later controlled by the fire-brigade, the SSP said.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the scrap in which the explosion occurred was brought from Army. It is not clear whether the scrap contained some unused shell. The owner of the scrap shop is being questioned regarding this, Dubey said. Senior officials have rushed to the spot and rescue operation was underway.

Panic gripped among tourists visiting the Taj Mahal area as it was very close to the site. The situation has been brought under control. The tourists are allowed to visit Taj Mahal and the shops in the area started doing normal business, the SSP said.
