3 injured after portion of elevated road falls off in Madhuban chowk

Three people sustained severe injuries, and were rushed to a hospital immediately, after a portion of an under-construction elevated road at outer Delhi’s Mangolpuri - Madhuban Chowk fell off over a few cars on Thursday morning.

The incident took place around 11 am when an extended over-head pillar of the elevated road fell on a Hyundai i10 reportedly being driven by a businessman identified as Sanjay Bajuria. His wife Vedika Vajuria was sitting on the navigation seat. The labourer, identified as Bechain Singh, was passing by when the accident happened.

A local called up the police control room immediately and all three injured persons were rushed to the Jaipur Golden hospital in Rohini. Two other cars–a Maruti Suzuki and a Maruti Alto were also damaged in the incident. While there were no occupants in the Maruti Suzuki, which was parked beneath the elevated road, the Alto was reportedly taking a U-turn. However, the driver of the Alto escaped unscathed.

“It appears that the straps supporting the side wing of a pillar of the flyover snapped leading to the collapse,” said a senior police official. He further said that, the exact cause of the incident is still being investigated as no construction work was being carried out at the time of the accident. A case of negligence has been registered against unknown persons.

According to a source, the construction work of the road had been allotted to a Mumbai based firm. “We are also probing the cause of the mishap. Quality of construction, the material used and technical points will also be probed,” said an official of Public Works Department.

The incident led to severe traffic snarl in the area and kept traffic officials busy for hours. Traffic Police officials said the accident forced them to divert the traffic from the Pitampura route to Peeragarhi Chowk. Traffic flow was brought to normal only by the evening.
