‘2G’ Balwa used prime, charitable land for commercial projects!

Shahid Balwa, K M Goenka and Vinod Goenka, whose names had figured in the notorious 2G telecom scam, are back in the news. An FIR has been registered against them and 11 others for allegedly cheating and misleading the Maharashtra government, as well as the court, to illegally claim 326 acres prime land in the Yeravada area.

The FIR, filed at Shivajinagar police station here on July 21 by RTI activist Ravi Barhate, alleged that the accused connived to fraudulently claim government land as ‘soil grant entitlement’ in the name of a city-based ‘Mukund Bhavan Trust’ (accused number one) to extract various permissions and concessions, by misrepresenting it as a registered public charitable trust in 1989.  The case was registered under Sections 463, 464, 467, 468, 471 and 420 of the IPC.

Barhate had initially approa-ched the divisional revenue commissioner with a written complaint on December 13, 2013. He said, then Pune district collector Srinivas Patil had worked out a ‘compromise’ with Mukund Bhavan Trust, surrendering Maharashtra’s claim over the land and partially releasing 79 acres of it to the party with an assurance of handing over the remaining land within four months after December 18, 1989.

Mukund Bhavan Trust, which got construction plans sanctioned for housing schemes for weaker sections of society, used it for commercial purposes to benefit all 14 of the accused. The land was used to construct five-star hotels and commercial towers, the complainant alleged.

The names of the 14 accused who figure in the FIR are Mukund Bhavan Trust, Mukunddas Murlidhar Lohiya (both from Pune), Bansilal Kabra (Nashik), Khushalchand Chandak (Buldhana), Purushottam Lohiya, Ramesh Kabra, Niranjan Hiranandani, (all from Pune), K M Goenka, Hills Side Constructions Ltd , Vinod K Goenka, D B Realty Pvt Ltd, Shahid Balwa (all from Mumbai), Panchasheel Tech Park and Premsagar Hotels Ltd (both from Pune).
