The city government on Thursday conducted massive raids on LPG agencies and registered 32 FIRs against blackmarketeers. As many as 293 illegal cylinders were seized. The raids were conducted by the Food, Supplies and Consumer Affair Department following the orders of Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung.
‘Several teams comprising Delhi Police and city government officials conducted raids on 164 suspected premises of various LPG agency owners. It was found that the dealers were siphoning off LPG from the domestic gas cylinders to fill small locally made cylinders,’ S S Yadav, Commissioner Food Supply and Consumer Affairs Department, said in a statement.
Such acts could lead to massive explosions. The locally made small cylinders are not only illegal but are also dangerous to use, he added. FIRs were lodged under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955 against 31 such dealers. ‘Under the Act, if found guilty, the offenders may face an imprisonment of up to seven years,’ Yadav said.
The Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Regulation of Supply and Distribution) order, 2000 of the Essential Commodities Act, bans unauthorised possession, supply and consumption of LPG and also the sale of underweight LPG cylinders, he added. A maximum of 73 illegal LPG cylinders were seized from south Delhi followed by 49 from New Delhi and 45 from west Delhi.
‘This is the second such operation by the department within a period of one month. Earlier, on 6 June, the department had conducted similar operations across the city and had seized 315 LPG cylinders and registered 34 criminal cases,’ Yadav added.
Yadav said the main areas where these raids were conducted are Sant Nagar, Wazirpur, Burari, Raza pur, Shahbad Daulat Pur, New Seema Puri, East Vinod Naga, Dakshin Puri, Mehrauli, Kapashera, Kalander Colony, Gokul Puri, Seema Puri, Dilshad Garden, Usman pur, Maya Puri, Taimur Nagar, Madan Pur Khadar.
