29-year-old man held for killing his landlady

A 29-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly killing his 55-year-old landlady and robbing her of cash and jewellery at South-west Delhi’s Bijwasan area, police said on Tuesday.

The accused has been identified as Amit Singh Bhandari, who fled to Rajasthan after the incident reported on September 22 and was finally arrested from Ajmer by a Crime Branch team, said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Yadav.

According to the police, <g data-gr-id="35">Vimla</g> Bhardwaj, wife of Ganesh Bhardwaj,  Chief Accountant at Central Water Commission in New Delhi, was found murdered — with her limbs tied with a rope — at her Bijwasan residence on September 22. Bharadwaj had an <g data-gr-id="36">anganwadi</g> at her home and her son lived at Dwarka Sector 22 with his family.

The body was discovered by the son who came to check on her, and later reported the matter to the police.

During the initial phase of the investigation, the needle of suspicion pointed towards Bharadwaj’s son and daughter-in-law with whom she did not have cordial relations. However, the probe took a new turn when it emerged that Bhardwaj had rented out several premises and one of her tenants was not seen by anyone after the incident.

When his call <g data-gr-id="25">rcords</g> were examined, it turned out that Bhandari Kapashera on <g data-gr-id="32">the fateful day</g> and later on in eastern Uttar Pradesh and finally at Ajmer.

When Bhandari was tracked down and questioned, he broke down and confessed to the crime. He further disclosed that he was going through a severe financial crunch and wasn’t in a position to pay his house rent.

He allegedly killed the landlady with the help of his associates  Ashwani, <g data-gr-id="24">Chuttan</g> and Ajju, who are still at large, said Yadav.

“All accused have been booked for the murder. A dedicated team is looking out for the absconding ones,” Yadav added.
