26-year-old student, pursuing project in JNU, commits suicide

A 26-year-old MSc student pursuing a project under the mentorship of a Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) professor committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan of his room at his rented accommodation in South Delhi’s Ber Sarai area on Thursday morning. According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Dushyant Dikshit, a native of Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh, who lived on the fourth floor of the hostel in a single room. The cops have recovered a suicide note in which he has mentioned he is ending his life because of personal problems.

The police said that they got a call at 9:43 am on Thursday that a student has been found hanging in room number 602 of the Guardian Hostel in Neb Sarai. When the police reached the spot, they found glasses, an Oxford dictionary and a cupboard in his room. As per the boys living in the hostel, they saw him often but never interacted with him.

“After a detailed inquiry into Dushyant’s background, it was found that he was pursuing MSc from Invertis University in Bareilly. He got in touch with JNU professor Dr R K Brojen of the School of Computational and Integrative Science after his assistant professor Dr Nitesh Poddar gave Dushyant his reference,” said a senior police official.

“Dushyant completed his project between January to July 2015. As per JNU, such a project is done under faculty directly and he was not a enrolled student of JNU,” added the official.

He was living with his cousin in Khajoori Khas area and shifted to Neb Sarai three months back.

A police source said: “The suicide note mentions “I am sorry Mummy and Papa for taking such a step.”

The letter further mentioned the name of a girl whom he was in a relationship with. The letter stated: “Please give all my belongings to her including my ATM card. I wish that despite our failed relationship, if she gets married and has a son, she should name him Dushyant.”

Police have informed his family and have kept his body in a mortuary till the time they come down to Delhi. A case under Section 174 of CrPc (Inquest Proceeding ) has been initiated into the matter.
