255 PhD holders among 23L lining up for peon’s job in UP

Graduates, post-graduates and even <g data-gr-id="17">PhD</g> holders are among the 23 lakh applicants vying for the post of peon in UP government secretariat.

A record of <g data-gr-id="24">sort</g> was created after the government, which advertised for 368 peon posts in <g data-gr-id="25">secretariat</g>, got 23 lakh responses. The minimum qualification for the post is that the applicant should be a Class 5 <g data-gr-id="19">passout</g> and know how to ride a bicycle. 

Grabbing the opportunity, opposition parties in unison attacked the SP-led government over its promise of providing employment to the youth.

Of the 368 posts, 268 are for general category and the rest for SC, ST and other reserved categories in the age group of 18 to 40 years. “When we categorised the applications viz-a-viz a qualification, we were surprised to find that 255 doctorates have applied for the job,” a senior official said.

He said while over 1.5 lakh graduates have applied for the job, the number of post-graduates is 24,969. High school or equivalent <g data-gr-id="21">passouts</g> comprise the maximum numbers with over 11.21 lakh applicants as compared to class five pass outs, whose number is 53,426.
