The quality of health-care provided by Delhi government-aided hospitals is under the scanner, in the light of growing neo-natal and pregnancy deaths in the city. Information available with Millennium Post reveals that in the past five years, 2,500 neo-natal deaths and 150 maternal deaths were reported in across 12 government-aided hospitals in the city.
An RTI report by activist Zasheen Haidar, reveals the sorry state of health-care in these hospitals. According to the report, in Sanjay Gandhi Memorial hospital 1,200 babies died during delivery, while 42 maternal deaths were reported. In Babu Jagjjivan Ram Memorial hospital 381 neo-natal deaths and 7 maternal deaths were reported, in Baba Saheb Ambedkar hospital 82 maternal deaths were reported, in Rao Tula Ram memorial hospital 119 neo-natal deaths and 2 maternal deaths were reported, while at Maharishi Balmiki hospital 29 neo-natal deaths and 4 maternal deaths were reported.
222 neo-natal deaths and 11 maternal deaths were reported in Dr Hedgegewar hospital, 313 neo-natal deaths and 3 maternal deaths were reported in Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital, 10 neo-natal deaths and 6 maternal deaths were reported in Bhagwaan Mahaveer hospital, 16 neo-natal deaths were reported in Pt. Madan Mohan Malviya hospital, 12 neo-natal deaths were reported in Ayurvedic and Unanai Tibia hospital, 77 neo-natal deaths were reported in Jag Parvesh Chander hospital and in Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital 176 neo-natal deaths were reported.
A government official, who sought anonymity said that 'This data shows that we are lagging far behind the promises we had made for providing good health care in the Delhi.
If this is the condition of health-care facilities in the national capital, one shudders to think of the condition in remote areas of the country.’
