Delhi Police on Monday detained as many as 25 AAP supporters in Tilak Marg who had assembled at the India Gate to pay their tributes to the RTI activist Chandra Mohan Sharma. The AAP supporters alleged that the police had thrashed them arbitrarily. Even women and children were beaten up by the police.
While talking to the Millennium Post, the AAP supporters claimed that they were detained in Tilak Marg police station and were peacefully paying tributes at around 7 pm.
‘We were not violating any norms. We had peacefully gathered for the candle light march. But after we assembled there, over 50 police personnel started to drag us including women and children. When we opposed, they detained us in Tilak Marg police station. Some senior police officials have also misbehaved with the women,’ said Amit Mishra, an AAP worker.
‘We don’t know why we were not allowed to pay tributes to the martyr Chandra Mohan Sharma, we were about to hold a candle light vigil, demanding detailed investigation in his murder case. Even the police did not spare the kids and thrashed them too,’ he added.
Meanwhile, Mukesh Kumar Meena, Joint Commissioner of New Delhi Range while talking to Millennium Post said that the police had detained several AAP supporters as they were carrying out a candlelight vigil and had not taken any permission from the Delhi Police which is mandatory before hosting any assembly or gathering at the India Gate.
‘They were not detained for violating Section 144. But the police detained them on account of not taking permission for hosting the candlelight march. The supporters were released at around 10 pm,’ Meena added.
