2,400 exhibitors to participate in handicraft fair

Around 2,400 exhibitors will display their products including decorative, Christmas gifts, woodware, paper and fragrance items in a handicraft fair at Greater Noida, beginning on Friday.

Last year, about 2,300 exhibitors had participated in the Indian Handicrafts and Gifts Fair (IIGF).

‘The fair is expected to attract more than 5,000 buyers from various countries including the US, Europe, Japan, Australia and South Africa,’ Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH) Executive Director Rakesh Kumar said.

The four-day long exhibition, organised by the EPCH, is a business-to-business show which aims at providing a platform to exporting as well as importing community to interact and conduct business.

Besides the US and Europe, a large number of overseas buyers came from countries like Japan, Australia and South Africa. Last year, the fair attracted about 4,000 buyers.

The US and Europe together account for about 60 per cent of the country’s total handicraft shipments.

The council said that emphasis would be on recycled and eco-friendly items in the fair.

During April-January 2012-13, the handicraft exports have grown 22 per cent to USD 2.3 billion compared to the same period last fiscal.

The handicraft sector employs one million people. Moradabad, Jaipur, Saharanpur and Jodhpur are the major handicraft hubs in the country catering to global markets.
