In an incident of dowry harassment, a 24-year-old woman was stabbed by her husband as a birthday gift in east Delhi’s Mandawli area on Thursday. The victim is battling for life at the hospital and the husband remains at large.
According to the police, the incident took place on Thursday morning, when Sachin Verma, husband of the victim, went at his in-law’s residence in Mandawli area where his wife was living for the past one week.
In the recent past, the couple had a fight over dowry demands and since then she was living with her parents.
On Thursday morning, Verma made a call to his wife Sonam and wished to meet her to give her a birthday gift on Wednesday. Sonam agreed to meet him and called him at her paternal house. On reaching the place, Verma knocked the door and Sonam came to open the gate.
‘Initially, Verma hugged her and wished her ‘Happy Birthday’ and said he had brought a precious gift for her. He took out a knife from his pocket and stabbed her in the stomach,’ a police official said quoting victim’s statement.
In the meantime, the victim’s mother returned home from the market and saw him stab her. Sonam was immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital and the police was called. Her condition is stated to be critical. However, she has given a statement to the police that her husband used to harass her over dowry.
