20-yr-old DU girl jumps to death on metro track at Race Course

The incident took place at around 3.45 pm on the Yellow Line of Delhi Metro. ‘It happened all of a sudden. The woman who was walking normally on the platform for quite some time and suddenly she jumped on the track as the train was about to enter,’ said a CISF official who present at the spot. He further said, the woman was immediately pulled out of the under-frame of the train and rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where she was declared brought dead.

The deceased, identified as Murtaza, a resident of Najafgarh, was a final year BA student in Kalindi College. ‘Her identity was established through a library card that she was carrying’, said Sanjay Bhatia, Deputy Commissioner of Police, (Railways), while adding that no suicide note was recovered from her. The reason behind the extreme step has not been ascertained yet. But the police is questioning her family members and friends for clues. ‘Her body was sent for a postmortem examination and her father was immediately informed about the incident,’ Bhatia added.

The incident happened during the non-peak hours when the frequency of trains were low. But, the services on the Yellow Line were disrupted for about five to ten minutes,’ said a DMRC official.

Shockingly, so far ten persons have died this year by jumping on the metro track. Records of CISF reveal that in past three years, over 40 people have committed suicide in Delhi by jumping on metro tracks.

In a bid to prevent such incidents, DMRC is planning to install Platform Screen Doors (PSD) at all stations on two new lines — Mukundpur to Shiv Vihar) and Janakpuri West to Kalindi Kunj. The DMRC will also install PSDs on six heavily crowded stations of Blue Line — Jahangirpuri to HUDA City Centre. The stations of Kashmere Gate, Chandni Chowk, Chawri Bazar, New Delhi, Rajiv Chowk and Central Secretariat will have PSDs by November 2015, said a DMRC official.
