20 years on, Faizabad smiles on 6 December

Cocking a snook at the apprehension of violence on the 20th anniversary of the demolition of Babri Mosque, people of this temple town of Ayodhya even went ahead with marriage celebration as the town was turned into a fortess.
With more than 10,000 security personnel being deployed in and around Ayodhya , the life was ' as usual' like normal days though the markets were closed due to Thursday weekly closure in Faizabad. The people of Ayodhya , who earlier avoided holding any ceremonies on this day for the past 20 years, went ahead and if police reports are to be believed 10 marriages are slated on Thursday near the disputed structure.
‘The security was tight in view of recent communal clashes in Faizabad. But the day passed off peacefully,’ Principal Secretary (Home) R M Srivastava said in Lucknow.
The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) celebrated the day as a Shaurya Diwas (Bravery Day), the Muslims under the banner of Babri Masjid Action Committee (BMAC) hoisted black flag and observed the day as a Yaum-e-gham (mourning day). The Muslims also held dharna at Gandhi Park in Faizabad demanding construction of mosque at Ayodhya as promised by the then Prime Minister Narsimha Rao after the demolition of the Babri mosque.
‘VHP will oppose any move to construct mosque near the disputed site,’ said Ram Janambhoomi Trust member Ramvilas Vedanti during a function at the Karsevekpuram. The function was attended by other than Ram Janambhoomi Trust chairperson Mhant Nritya Gopal Das.
‘We have specific information that the Central government with the help of Mulayam Singh Yadav could again try to appease the Muslims by announcing any mosque or Islamic Center in Ayodhya before the 2014 LS polls. These would be opposed tooth and nail and would not be allowed at any cost,’ Vedanti said.
The former two time BJP MP, Vedanti also said that 6 Dec is the first 'freedom day' of the Hindus of the country and it should be celebrated like 15 Aug or 26 Jan’. On the other hand Hasim Ansari, the original plantiff in the Ram Janambhoomi title suit blamed the Cong for the entire Ayodhya controversy and reiterated that Muslims are not ready to compromise with anything less than a mosque in Ayodhya.
Talking to this reporter over 90 year old Ansari, said that Congress was still playing political game with the muslims.
