According to police, the incident took place when labourers were renovating the building in Pahari Dhiraj. Pushpa (60) and Rani (45) were killed in the incident, while the injured have been identified as Ramu (28) and Geeta (50). All victims are labourers who were working in the building.
‘Most of the victims were present on the first floor of the building at the time of the collapse,’ said a police official. A call was made to the police control room at around 12.30 pm after which the fire department was also informed.
‘Three fire tenders were rushed to the spot for the rescue operations,’ said a fire official. The victims were taken to Hindu Rao Hospital, where Pushpa and Rani were declared brought dead.
After an initial probe, police said that the roof of the third floor had collapsed which also damaged other parts of the building. Sources said the building was owned by Sehwag’s father-in-law Swaraj Singh Ahlawat. He had given a part of the building on rent to a man named Ramesh. It is alleged that Ramesh was conducting renovation of the first floor.
Police have registered a case against unidentified people under sections 288 (negligent conduct with respect to repairing buildings) and 304 A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code.
On the other hand, locals allege that the area which houses several old buildings, has become a hub of illegal construction with the connivance of police and municipal corporation officers.
