2 killed, 20 severely injured in two road rage incidents

The accused in both the cases — one at the Nigam Bodh Ghat at northern Delhi and the other at Indirapuram in Ghaziabad – have been arrested and the victims were taken to nearby hospitals, where two succumbed to their injuries and condition of six are still reported to be critical, said the police.

Around 10 pm on Sunday, a speeding Mahindra Xylo SUV rammed into a pavement near the Nigam Bodh Ghat U-turn in northern Delhi, where hundreds of homeless people sleep at night. ‘The wheels on the right side of the car boarded the four-to-five-inch high pavement speeding over 12 people.

The vehicle finally stopped when four of the victims got stuck beneath its suspension,’ said Rajkumar Patnaik, an eye-witness.

He further added that while the driver was trying to run away, the woman sitting beside him was making phone calls one after another asking for help. The drunken driver was held by the people there, and later handed over to the police, when they arrived after receiving a PCR call at 10:15 pm.

‘The vehicle had to be pushed 90 degrees side-ward down, to rescue the four victims trapped beneath it. It took around 12 people to do that,’ he added.

The accused has been identified as Rishi Kumar (30), who resides at West Vinod Nagar in east Delhi and works as a property dealer there. ‘He was driving after consuming alcohol, which was clear after the tests. He was immediately arrested and booked under sections 304A, 279, 337 and 338 of the IPC,’ said Madhur Verma, Deputy Commissioner of Police (north).

The deceased has been identified as Ikraj (20), a rag-picker, who breathed his last at the Sushruta Trauma Centre on Monday morning. The victims were rushed to four different hospitals nearby and police officials were asked to monitor the situation in each,’ Madhur Verma added.

In Ghaziabad, the victims were admitted to the nearby hospitals where two succumbed to their injuries while condition of six are said to be critical. The victims were immediately admitted to Intensive Care Unit of Pushpanjali Hospital where the one, Pushpa (33), died after few hours of treatment while others are recuperating.
