Two girl students of the Madurai Kamaraj University College at Tirumangalam, about 30 kms from here, on Friday suffered serious burns after a man threw acid on them, a senior police official said.
The girls Meena and Angaleeswari, both aged 19, were passing through Perumal Kovil street on the way to bus stand after their classes when the man threw acid on them and fled the scene, IG of Police Abhay Kumar Singh said.
While the target of the man seemed to be Meena, who suffered serious burns on her face and body, Angaleeswari sustained burns on her body when she tried to protect her friend from the attack, he said.
A special team had been formed to nab the culprit, he said. Later the police official said, quoting some eye witness, that the man would be around 35 years.
