The Delhi Traffic Police has planned two diversions at the ITO, likely to be implemented by April, once the metro construction near the otherwise choked junction is over, said a senior official on Wednesday.
According to the first of the two diversions planned, vehicles approaching from Tilak Marg, Sikandara Road and Mathura road, which merge into Bahadur Shah Zafar Road, shall not be allowed to take a right turn towards Vikas Marg. Drivers will have to take a compulsory left turn at the Deen Dayal Upadhaya Marg; follow the road to Vishnu Digamber Marg; take a right turn towards the Kotla Marg and head straight to reach Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg.
From there, they shall have to again take a turn towards the ITO junction and later take the left towards Vikas Marg. According to the second diversion planned, commuters approaching from Minto Road and heading towards East Delhi cannot take the Deen Dayal Upadhaya Road and land directly at the ITO. They shall have to take the left before Anuvrat Bhawan, reach Kotla Marg and then head towards Bahadur Shah Zafar Road. They shall have to turn again towards the ITO junction and later turn eastward.
This move is supposed to decongest the ITO junction by diverting as much as 60 per cent of the traffic (moving eastward) during the peak hours of the day, said the senior official. However, the final blue print is yet to be prepared. A similar plan is also in the pipeline for decongesting Greater Kailash 1, the senior official added.
