The resignation of the two Lok Sabha MPs and former Congress working committee member K
Keshava Rao from the party and their decision to join the Telengana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) on 2 June could spell doom for the N Kiran Kumar Reddy-led Congress government in Andhra Pradesh. Keshava Rao said after waiting for several years for the Congress to take a decision, they were joining the TRS to respect people’s sentiments.
Lok Sabha members G Vivek and Manda Jagannatham and K Keshava Rao announced their decision after a meeting with TRS chief K Chandrasekhara Rao in Hyderabad. The announcement came as the deadline set by them for the Congress leadership to take a favourable decision on formation of Telangana state ended on Thursday.
The Congress has 50 MLAs from the region, while the TDP has 36 and TRS 11 in the 294-member assembly. The Congress has 155 seats in the House. In the past, 39 MLAs and seven Lok Sabha members had put in their papers to bring pressure on the Congress leadership to make the Telangana dream come true.
Lok Sabha member Vivek’s brother and former state minister G Vinod has also decided to join TRS. Vivek represents Pedapalli constituency while the other Lok Sabha member to have resigned, Jagannatham, represents Nagarkurnool. They were assured by the TRS that they would get tickets from the same constituencies to contest next year’s elections.
